This year I am ready thanks to BaxterBoo and their wonderful collection of haute or in this case “haunting” fashion for us four-legged trick or treaters. I wanted to make sure to wear something bright and colorful so people will see me and give me all the extra treats that I deserve this year.
Please forgive my unkept look, my mom is trying to learn how to groom me herself as my groomer and I had a falling out. So now my lovely locks are a bit uneven. BUT the GREAT PUMPKIN needs only treats to feel beautiful.
Life is like a pumpkin patch… sometimes you fall and become a squash and sometimes you have to just do the math and divide the circumference by its diameter to get a delicious Pumpkin Pi.
Love always
THE GREAT PUMPKIN
(aka SadieMiki)
Sadie, you are the cutest pumpkin ever. And there are lots of good videos for your Mom to watch to learn to groom you herself. Tell her it’s important to have the right equipment: good quality clipper, blades, and scissors. If she has any questions, I will be glad to help out “long-distance.” Just email me at lexitheschnauzer@gmail.com and I will send her my number.
Thank you so much … I would love any tips … we bought these tools: 1. FURminator brush 2. Christophe Robin Brush travel brush 3. Shiny Pet steel comb 4. HHR Pro hairdressing sheer (mom thinks we need a different sheer) 5. Centrix Quiet Ceramic Hair Dryer (we will be using this today … my first grooming bath at home) 6. Yogipet hands free hair dryer holder Mom’s biggest worry is how to wash my face and get my eye area clean. Right now she is watching a video on how to get matts out as I have one behind my hear that she wants out before I have my bath… LOL I hope it takes all day as I do not want a bath!
First, the mat: Using sharp, pointed shears, and being sure Sadie is still, open them and insert them just below the matted hair (between the mat and the skin). Pull up and the shears should slice right through the mat. May have to do this several times, then it will comb right out. If the mat is too close to the skin, the best thing to do is to use a #40 or the shortest blade you have and using the corner of the blade, shave it. I will look up that those tools, as I am not familiar with any of them, and get back to you.
Shiny pet comb has both wide and narrower teeth, which is good. Go through with the wide first and repeat with the narrow. If you didn’t buy clippers and blades, and think you will use them, consult me for the best ones to get – NOT at the pet store. What I would use that for on Sadie is a #40 (surgical) blade across the bottoms of her paws (which you can scissor if you are very careful) and to clean her tummy, shaving from back to front, with a #10 blade. You also use the #10 to shave the hair under her tail, around her anus, being extremely careful to not nick her there.
If she usually gets the hair shaved right under her eyes, then either of these blades will work. For a beginner I would suggest the #10, shaving down from the inside corner for about 1/2″. If they don’t look like they have been shaved, leave them alone.
You will also need ear powder to use when you pull the hair out of her ears, and ear cleaner if her ears are waxy or dirty. Some dogs never seem to need their ears cleaned, but most do.
I looked up the Christopher Robin brush. It sounds good, but don’t know how it will work on her hair. Groomers typically use what’s called a slicker brush. It’s a no nonsense wire brush that is a first attack on mats and gives a fluffy finish.
Let me know how else I can help.

THANK YOU I am going to purchase these suggestions now 🙂 I got that matt out and now it is bath time … we have this new shampoo we got at the vet called Keto-Med PS Shampoo. I would love a suggestion for a clipper to buy and what ear powder to use.
Wish you were closer I would definitely have you work on Sadie. But for now, Sadie must trust me LOL. (not sure what she will look like but she will be clean.)
She’s such a pretty girl. Looking closer at her picture, it does appear that she has been shaved under the inner corners of her eyes.
The best clippers are Oster Special Edition (if still available) and the best blades are Andes ceramic blade. The ceramic blades cannot be sharpened, but just grooming one dog, they never should need sharpened.
I’m guessing Sadie has skin problems if the vet recommended medicated shampoo. Another one to consider is 4Legged that you can order online. It is 100% natural and uses only essential oils in either water or aloe vera. Ear powder – I don’t think it really matters. Just talcum powder would work. It’s purpose is to give you a grip. To clean ears I use a solution of apple cider vinegar and water. As you can see, I use as little chemicals as possible.
More than once I have taught clients how to groom their own dog when they requested that. I think it’s great for them to not have the trauma of going to the groomers and sitting in a cage for hours. Anything else, just ask!
