sadiehaloween2018_costumeThis year I am ready thanks to BaxterBoo and their wonderful collection of haute or in this case “haunting” fashion for us four-legged trick or treaters. I wanted to make sure to wear something bright and colorful so people will see me and give me all the extra treats that I deserve this year.

Please forgive my unkept look, my mom is trying to learn how to groom me herself as my groomer and I had a falling out.  So now my lovely locks are a bit uneven. BUT the GREAT PUMPKIN needs only treats to feel beautiful.

Life is like a pumpkin patch… sometimes you fall and become a squash and sometimes you have to just do the math and divide the circumference by its diameter to get a delicious Pumpkin Pi.

Love always
THE GREAT PUMPKIN

How to Care for Your Human

Remember the golden rule: your human NEEDS you. They try to act like they are in control but we know the reality, without us humans could barely survive.

Teach them to play
People forget to play, they sit at their computers typing away, or idly swishing and swiping at their iPad or iPhone. Sometimes they even get mad at something they read in on those devices. I have a remedy for this bad behavior  called playtime. All you have to do is bring them a ball or a favored stuffed animal like my green froggie or talking Eeyore.

It is amazing how quickly they smile and join in on the fun. A really good game is throw the ball, they never tire of that game.

Taste their Food
It is very important that you confirm that your people are safe and eating healthy. So an occasional small bite is a necessary task you must complete ever so often. I always take on the task of sampling any cheese that might have gone bad or cantaloupe that might not be sweet enough.

Walk them Often
It is dreadfully important to keep your person exercising and a good walk is the best form of exercise  next to a little weight lifting. To get your two-legged into weight lifting all you need to do is look up at them with sorrowful eyes and reach your paws up to them. If you are too big for your human to pick up you can always utilize a good tug of war for band resistance training.

Guard them as they Sleep
People often forget about all those ghoulies and ghosties that lurk about at night in the shadows. It is important to keep the house safe while they sleep so always keep one eye open and your ear to the ground so that you can chase them away and they do not steal your person.

Kiss them Often
It is more than just slobber, its a daily dose of Oxytocin that reduces blood pressures and increases the bond between you and your two-legger.

No matter your size, your weight or your color: we dogs are the wag in our people’s day and the smile in their hearts. Take care of your two-legged today and remember they need us.

Here’s wagging at you, Sadie.

Oh the horror of it! Something happened this month that made my skin crawl. ANTS ANTS ANTS crawling all over my food. It made my people say nasty words that I have never heard before.

We tried everything to fix the problem. The little invaders that look like aliens were hard to combat; I had fun watching the two-leggers march around with spray bottles of equal parts of Windex and Ivory Soap, laying lines of Borax Soap on the patio, placing yeast and sugar traps beyond my reach but in the reach of the ants. The two-leggers were on a mission to rid us of these invaders from another world. The house was washed down with vinegar and lemon soap. All my food and treats were tossed. It caused me quite a scare.

Thank goodness a solution was found for my precious food and treats. The people ordered some special canisters for me to put my kibble, snacks and dog treats in.

They got these cool canisters from a company called simplehuman. I really like to watch the lids open.

The company also has dog food canisters but for a petite pup like me these kitchen tool canisters worked perfectly. Here’s hoping that your days are all ant-free and fun!

I am thinking about what wonderful things you might be bringing me this season, perhaps a new squeaky, a wonderful swirly bone that I can brush my teeth with or maybe a new blanket to cuddle with. But wait I live with some wonderful people who give me everything I could ever want so maybe I can ask you to visit some less fortunate two leggers and four leggers around the world.

My people adopted a few letters from the postal service last year to help out some families that were in need. Perhaps dear Santa you might want to adopt a letter from the post office. This is great for those two leggers who need Santa to come to the rescue.
And a wonderful place to help the two-leggers who need a four-legger to help them is the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind or you might want to help those who have served our country and have PTSD at Patriot PAWS. And let’s remember it is better to give than receive.

We all need to believe in Santa during this time of year. I believe… do you?

Pet Safety

Yesterday while having a bite with my people at Spoonful (a very dog friendly restaurant… they serve water with ice cubes! Perfect for those hot days) we saw what could have been a horrific accident. A vehicle was driving down the boulevard at a good speed with two four leggers hanging out the window. It happened so fast, one of the four leggers jumped out the window. Breaks squealed, smoke and rubber seemed to come off the pavement and a dog was on the road. Scared, disoriented and shocked.

Luckily this story ends on a happy note. Patrons of the restaurant, including my two leggers jumped up to help. An UPS truck stopped blocking the other lane of traffic. The dog’s owner jumped out of the stopped vehicle and everyone rushed to help this poor little pup. This has caused me to think about pet safety issues and how important it is to follow some rules while driving with your people.

There are lots of great products out there and I personally recommend the Snoozer Pet Car Safety System. The system has a comfy booster seat they call a “Lookout Pet Car Seat” with a Safety Harness and a Seat Belt Adapter. Now this system is for petite four leggers like myself. There are other options if you are a bigger four legger. There is the Solvit Pet Vehicle Safety Harness which looks quite nice.

Here are some tips and travel tricks for traveling with your four legged family member.

1. Prep
Be prepared. Always remember to wear your ID tags in case you lose sight of your two leggers. Water is always an essential even on short trip just in case you get thirsty. My people keep a collapsible bowl for me which works for water as well as food. You might want to bring a few kibbles with you as you never know when your two leggers decide to stay out past your tummy’s feed-me grumblings. We already discussed safety so have your safety device ready… be it a harness, booster seat with belt or a travel crate. I also like to bring a toy or chewy in case of boredom. If you have medical needs remember to bring your pills and potions. A Pet First-Aid Kit would be a wonderful addition.

2. Potty Breaks
Don’t Get Wet. Accidents happen be they an upset tummy from motion sickness to a bladder bump in the road. It is very important to stop ever so often to relieve yourself. Remember to always have your lead on before the door opens just in case there is a squirrel or other temptation outside that causes you to forget where you are and take off. Try to park in the shade so the car does not heat up too much and NEVER EVER leave a four legger in a car, cars can get too hot.

3. Keep Your Head
Don’t allow your pet to ride with his head outside the window, it looks like fun but it can cause inner ear damage and lung infections, and you could be injured by flying objects or jump out by accident.

Enjoy the ride and be safe.

Etch-a-Sadie

Etch-a-Sadie

 I am my people’s muse.
When they are feeling blue I can make them smile with just one sloppy kiss or a mere wag of my wondrous whirling tail.

Sadie-hol

Sadie-hol

I inspire them with my colorful imagination:
I bury bones with imaginary dirt all through the house. This often causes the occasional stubbed toe when someone unearths one of my hidden treasures.

Lichten-Sadie

Lichten-Sadie

I delight them with my fresh perspective:
I bark at the TV when I see a dog, squirrel or fake Gecko rushing behind the TV speakers to cry for the poor animal to come out and play.

Mona_Lisa_bySTEINER_SADIE

I humor them with my whimsical expressions:

I listen to every word my people say, well almost. My head cocks from side to side as they tell me their most private thoughts. I am a creative therapist; almost anything can be solved by a good game of ball. Funny how throwing a little round object can make them forget all their problems and smile.

Remember your four-legger is a masterpiece that you help mold. Paint everyday a happy one!

Get some GOOD Karma (help the four-leggers!)

Today I sit here thinking of how wonderful my life is and how important it is that all four-leggers get to experience the love that my home surrounds me with. If you live in the Los Angeles area you can come in-person to the wonderful event, or if you live somewhere else just as beautiful there is an online auction to give back the Karma to the Rescues. Here are the d’Tails:

Thank you for reading about this fun event and remember to hug a four-legger today!

I am so excited, my two-legged pal and I were watching our favorite show The Jane Velez-Mitchell show on HLN.

The Jane Velez-Mitchell Show

The Jane Velez-Mitchell Show

Jane Velez-Mitchell takes a stand on the biggest topics of the day that people across the country are buzzing about. And today August 15th 2013 she talked about me! I was the buzz of the “Pet of the Day”

As Andy Warhol said in 1968 that “In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.” I got my short-lived media publicity today! Thank you Jane! Keep up the great stories. 4 paws up and and many wags rating!

I have a bone to pick when it comes to size. I see all the other dogs with their two-leggers doing some astonishing things…
Image
carrying large sticks they find on their walks, jumping in the air catching round flying objects, hanging out car windows with their ears flying and jowls flapping in the wind… it just gets my muzzle twitching green with envy. I am a big girl, in a few months I will be one year old and it finally dawned on me that I might never grow any larger than my current stature. I only weigh in at 4.5lbs and all the other four-leggers in my tricks classes are taller than me…even the puppies!

Speaking of my tricks class…woof… I learned a very useful trick…
the ringing of a bell.

Service Please!

Service Please!

5a

It seems as if this little bell is a service bell that when you ring it, people bring you lots and lots of treats.  What a joy, now I must find a way to take this bell home with us. If I was a larger dog I would just put it in my mouth and carry it out with us to the car.  But no, I am small and must hope that my people decide to give me one of these pretty bells for my birthday. It is so frustrating to be so small.

As I close my little blog today I think of all the privileges I get as a petite pup. I often get to ride in a  dog sling purse…you can get your own at sassypup. This purse sometimes gets me into places that the larger dogs can not go. Hmmm it’s not bad being small. Today’s thought… “Be happy for who you are, it makes you unique.”

Friday I got my locks cut and must say thank goodness for the people at Sparky’s who saved me from having an unfashionable “puppy cut”. It seems that most two legged parents ask for a puppy cut thinking it means a haircut that makes their four legged pal look like a puppy again. NO said the wonderful people at Sparkys… you need to decide just as you would when getting your own hair cut what length you would like and if there is a particular special look you would like to emulate a celebrity dog like Boo you need to ASK for that hairdo. I did not want to emulate anyone since I believe I have my own style as you can see here.
Image

I do however have a new nickname, my people have taken to calling me “Gremlin” and laughing about “don’t ever get them wet”. I find no humor in their laughter. It seems that I was very cute and very cooperative during my haircut until the groomer got me wet.
When my person came to gather me up from my makeover they told her about how my personality changed into some sort of monster when they got me wet. I m hoping to prove them wrong on my next appointment.

I have done a little research for you and have included some images of cuts your two leggers can ask for for your favorite four legger pals:

This is a “Teddy Bear Cut”:
